Funeral for Marengo man was held Monday
by Dave Fornell
Regional editor
A lifelong friend of murdered Hamphire Police Sgt. Gregory Sears was arrested Friday at the slain officer's home as he attempted to give his condo¬ lences to Sears' wife, Kane
County Sheriff Ken Ramsey said.
Police allege that John
Carroccia, 50, 908 Woodridge Drive, Rockford, shot the seven-year
Gregory Sears
veteran of the Hampshire Police force three times in the left side of the head.
at about 9 p.m., June 1. The inci¬ dent took place in a small indus¬ trial area on Elgiloy Drive off Route 20 near 1-90, in northwest Kane County, police said. He was found face down about 15 yards away from his patrol car, which was still running with its headlights on.
Hampshire Police said they had not received any radio calls from Sears indicating that he was on a service call or a traffic stop when the incident occurred. Investigators also said Sears had not unsnapped his pistol hol¬ ster, indicating that he probably knew his assailant and that he did not feel his safety was threatened.

Helping the hand that feeds
Huntley High students give back to community
by Susan Bohme
City editor •
The golden rule - treat others the way you want to be treated- is part of the fund-raising philoso¬ phy at Huntley High School this year. Students from various groups regularly converge on the community peddling cheese and sausage, fruit, candy, pizza and knick-knacks to support school- related trips, activities and equipment. This year, for the first time, students have been. required to give back to the com¬ munities that support them by donating their time to Various community seryice projects.
Principal Dave Johnson got the idea from the last school he worked at and approached Athletic Director Dave Moyer, who okays fund-raisers for all
extra-curricular activities, about getting those students involved in community service projects.
"We want to impress on our students that it isn't always hav¬ ing things done for them, it's a two-way street, and we are all stronger when we help each other," Johnson said.
Moyer sent a letter to commu¬ nity service organizations in the area telling them the high school was interested in helping with any projects they might have. After he had a few projects lined up, the give and take began.
"In order for me to sign off on a fund-raiser they had to commit to a community service project," he said.
The most recent project took place in May when the music department helped the Algonquin Rotary Club scrape and paint a
house for an Algonquin family. Band director Norm Vagn said about 20 students and several parents showed up and put in a full day of scraping, priming and painting. "We do a lot of fund- raising and any way we can give back is great," Vagn said.
The music department wrapped gifts, bagged groceries and sold fruit and other items to raise money for a trip to Disney World this spring.
There were a variety of ser¬ vice projects throughout the year. The girl's basketball team responded to letters sent to the Algonquin Rotary Club as part of their Santa's Maiilbox program. The cheerleaders helped a needy family with food and blankets throughout the year
