Congregational Youth Reflect On Habitat Workcamp

"On June 15-25, fifteen workcampers from the First Congregational Church traveled to New Orleans to work with Habitat for Humanity, which is a non- profit organization which builds homes for people unable to afford homes on their own. After renovating two houses for Hve days, we finished the week with sightseeing and shopping in the French Quarter of New Orleans." So comments Jenny Lange as she looks back on her' Habitat Workcamp experience.
Guy Voss, another of the workcampers who worked in New Orleans, adds, "My experience in New Orleans was a very interesting and exciting one. I met many new and interesting people, tasted many new and unusual foods and saw many exquisite sites along and during the trip. The house we rehabed was a very nice one and I feel we did a good job on it. Our leaders were very helpful and taught us many needed things about carpentry.
I think we all had an unusual time to say the least, bu; it was all worth it. I think we would all do it again if we had the chance. I know I would anyway. New Orleans was different, but great. I think we all learned something about a different lifestyle that will help us understand people better. It was a great time and a very fun and exciting one."
Derek Crabill reflects that "there were many experiences in the New Orleans Habitat For Humanity projects that the whole youth group will remember, some that only one or two of us will remember, but most remembrances will last for a lifetime.
We met the two families that
will be staying in the houses that we worked on. They seemed very nice and were definitely happy to live in a nice house that has electricity and good plumbing.
Working on the Lividais Drive project was an experience, to say the least! It looked as though, in my opinion, it should have been torn down a few years ago. We made a lot of progress and it looked much better after the five days of work. We knocked out a couple of walls and a whole room, including the floor and some of the joists under it. We repaired other holes in the floor. We built new rooms, made rooms smaller, or rooms larger. We also installed electricity and cleaned up the yard. Finally, but not least of all, we repaired termite damaged siding. The before and after pictures in my mind will never leave.
On the weekend we did some sightseeing. I met a homeless person in the French Quarter. I had sat down to get my stuff together and he started to talk to me. We talked for an hour about life, God, and other things. It was very interesting! Then I heard jazz at the birthplace of jazz, Preservation Hall!
It was an awesome trip and experience. If you ever think about doing work for Habitat For Humanity, don't give it a second thought. Call and sign up right away!"
Jenny concludes, "Everyone has their own special memories to keep and we can honestly say we've made a positive difference in these future homeowners' lives. Hopefully, we can continue these efforts in ours and other nearby communities."
Huntley Railroad Tracks To Be Repaired
The railroad tracks in Huntley are under renovation. The Main Street tracks will be repaired the week of July SOth. Repairs on the Route 47
tracks are scheduled to begin the week of August 5th. Detours will be posted during repairs.

Mulcahy, Nied Attend Music Camp
Pat Mulcahy and Jeff Nied performed on their Baritone Horns with the Symphonic Band at Illinois Summer Youth Music Camp at the University of Illinois.
Pat Mulcahy, Jr. of Huntley and Jeff Nied of Union, recently attended a two week session of band camp at the University of Illinois, Urbana, II. Illinois Summer Youth Music (ISYM) consisted of classes for technique and many rehearsals for a final concert for parents at the end of their camp. Pat and Jeff played their baritone horns in the symphonic band, which consisted of the top musicians who attended the camp. All students who attended camp at U of I went to a fireworks display at the U of I Football stadium on the 4th of
July. Students also had free time to use the campus facilities to play basketball, tennis, bowl and swim.'While shopping, ordering pizza, watching the big screen TV, and using the video arcade kept many students busy, the main day to day order was to practice, practice, practice. The Symphonic Band Concert was held in the Foellinger Great Hall in the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, on Friday night, July 12. Music included a Gershwin Portrait, an Irish Rhapsody, and marches. Parents and friends gave a standing
ovation for their wonderful performance, directed by Barry Ellis, Assistant Director of Bands, University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio.
Patrick will be a freshman at Huntley High School, where Jeff will be a sophomore. Pat won the Donahue Award in 8th grade for Most Outstanding Musician, and both boys took a 1st place on solos at the contest. Pat and Jeff both won a scholarship from the Huntley Music Boosters to attend ISYM. They will be under the direction of Miss E. J. Kriz this coming year at Huntley High School.
