HFPD Adds 2 More Full-Timers
By Tracey Schwartz
The Huntley Fire Protection District added two more full time firefighter/paramedics to the department this month. Russ Wilson and John Winkelman began working full time for HFPD last Monday, Dec. 16.
This move comes just about a month after the Powder Park apartment fire in which the department had only four daytime firefighters to respond. According to Wilson, with the two additional men the department will be able to handle more equipment and respond to more calls without depending on the paid-on-call firefighters.
The addition of two more men prompted a readjustment of the department's dispatch procedures which was part of their first day orientation. According to Fire Chief Dave Veath, the first ambulance, non-structural fire and vehicle accident calls will be dispatched as fire day still - that is, handled by the daytime full time firefighters.
In addition to responding to fire and rescue calls, Wilson and Winkelman will be responsible for fire inspections of existing buildings, public relations and maintenance of the fire house, equipment and grounds.
Wilson has been a paid-on-call firefighter with Huntley for 6 years and a paramedic for 2. Previously he worked as a full time gravel truck/ready mix driver for 2 years. Working for Huntley is nothing new to Wilson. He worked in Streets for Huntley Public Works for 4
years.
Wilson is currently studying to obtain his Firefighter 3 license. In addition, he is certified as a Fire Apparatus Engineer (FAE).
Residents of Huntley, Wilson and his wife, Vicki, have two toddlers, Daniel, 20 months, and Carli, 8 months.
Winkelman comes to HFPD from his position as an industrial engineer at Union Special. He is currently serving his second term as the volunteer captain of the Marengo Rescue Squad. A seven year veteran as a paramedic, Winkelman has served Marengo Rescue for 10 years and | Huntley for 3 years. He is currently certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
Orginally from Marengo, Winkelman lives there with his wife, Lois, and 3 daughters, Sherie, 11; Tara, 8; and Julie, 6.
Wilson emd Winkelman were among several firefighters who applied for full time positions last year. They took a written test, a physical and an oral interview last year and were ranked according to test scores. Wilson and Winkelman were offered the positions as the n«xt available people on that list.
Both men are very excited to work full time as firefighter/ paramedics. Wilson said,''We didn't get into this for the money, I wanted to give my life to this. If I can do it as my work and get paid ... all the better. I'm gonna like this (job)... I hope to be here for 20 years."
Top right: These ladies were among 66 members of the Senior Citizens Club of Huntley who enjoyed a Christmas luncheon last week at Bill's Village Inn Restaurant.
Bottom right: Senior Citizen Club Activity Director Alice Jordi awards Fra-ncis Fox and Marie Gorka a poinsettia afghan made by Pauline Funnekotter and a Christmas lamp made by Herb Eggers. The women's names were drawn from a fund-raising raffle put on recently by the club.
