Huntley Grade School Open House Educates Parents i    "-'      i;

Huntley Consolidated School District 158 held Parent Night for the elementary grades on Thursday, Sept. 23, at 7pm. Dr. Robert Bunt, in his opening address, congra¬ tulated staff and students for the excellent start to this school year. He announced that the high school's scores on state-wide tests were up dramatically from last year. He gave thanks to the Cole Foundation and the Huntley PTO, over $20,000 was donated for computers, computer technology and the computer lab for the middle school.
Dr. Bunt described the new ernphasis of the faculty on "cooperative learning" vs. competitive, using the concept of "kids helping kids"   and stressing learn¬ ing, not teaching, since so many of today's workplaces require problem-solving skills and group efforts;
Dr. Bunt stated that District 158 has reached the. crisis level of overcrowding for the present facilities. Currently some 866 students are enrolled, with room for 71 new students. He predicts there will be a total of 950 by the end of the school year, due to new housing developments in the area, and that over the next 10 years, there will be 4,000 students in this school district.
Since there is no more space on the school grounds ftjr additional mobile classrooms and the existing grade school core facilities (kitchen, cafeteria, gymnasium, offices, etc.) are not large enough for expected demand, Dr. Bunt said that
the Board of Education for School District 158 will probably run a referendum next March to raise money to begin building the first phase of the Educational Campus at the Harmony Road site.
He stated that due to financial considerations, there will not be a new school by Lake-In-The-Hills and that the school district wants cash donations from builders instead of the offered land donation.
School crossing guards and bus drivers are still needed, and Dr. Bunt expressed concern that the community be aware of the speed limits and other safety measures.
The Co-President of the Huntley PTO, Mrs. Kim Skaja, spoke of what was accomplish¬ ed last year and what is being planned for this year. She announced a meeting about plans for the new school to be held on Oct. 6, 1993 at 7pm in the Huntley High School cafeteria. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Principal  Kelly Baird then introduced the grade school staff and explained the schedule of teacher presentations. He mentioned the need for volunteers at the school library, reminded parents of the new lunch prices and offered advice on getting students through the upcoming SAT tests in October.

According to Dr. Bunt, since it would be less expensive to remodel the current high school for elementary use than to convert the elementary sc'nool
for high school students, the plan is to build a new ¦secondary school facility at the Harmony Road site to be opened in August, 1995. The campus project would be
developed over a period of time in response to increasing enrollment. The eventual goal will be the education of all District 158 students at this site.
Jerry Springer To Speak At Turning Point Dinner
Nationally syndicated talk show host Jerry Springer will be the keynote speaker at Turning Point's annual dinner to be held on Saturday, October 16, beginning at 6:30pm at Turnberry Country Club in Crystal Lake.
The one-time lawyer,
politician and news anchor became a talk show host in September, 1991. Currently in its third year, his show can be seen on WMAQ-TV/Channel 5 (NBC) at 1pm Monday through Friday. Tickets for Turning Point's
