Cadette Troup #134 Collects Food For Grafton Food Pantry

Huntley Girl Scout Cadette Troop #134 recently collected lots of grocery bags of food for the Grafton Township Food Pantry.
Each girl distributed 10 empty grocery bags to area homes. Residents wishing to donate simply filled their grocery bag and left it on their doorstep last Saturday for the Cadettes to pick up. Troop leader, Sue Brown, said quite a few participated plus they set up a drop box for food at the school.
Grafton Township supervisor, Millie Ruth, says about ten people a week utilize the food pantry.

Cassidy Wins State Poster Contest
The Huntley Fire Prevention Bureau is happy to announce that Huntley fourth grader, Kira Cassidy, won fu-st prize in the state poster contest This talented young lady was awarded a trophy and a $50 savings bond at a dinner meeting honoring each grade's winner.
Each year the Illinois Fire Inspector Association (IFIA) sponsors a poster coloring contest for students in grades K through 8th grades. Last year's second and fourth grades submitted colored posters with the theme "Check Your
Detector For Life." The Huntley Firefighters had to choose one from each grade to send to the IFIA, where it would be judged with all other entries submitted from the state. Kira Cassidy's poster was chosen as the best fourth grade entry.
The DFIA meeting was held at the William Tell Hotel in Countryside on October 28, 1994. Her parents, Joe and Moreen Cassidy, Chief Veath and Capt Wiesneth attended the award presentation.
Congratulations, Kira, for a job well done.

Until the Girl Scout donation last Saturday, she said the pantry was getting low but hopefully donations will increase with the holidays approaching. The food pantry delivers care packages at Thanksgiving and Christmas to approximately 20 families in the township each year.
Troop #134 Cadettes include Ashley Hardister, Tracy Brettschneider, Danielle Schmidt, Lynette Manning, Kristin Link, Lynette Jewel, Sarah Herrera, Yolanda Teveranus, Christina Hansen, Regina Ibeling, and Cassie Green. Troop leaders are Sue Green and Kathy Watson.
Coat Drive Begins In Huntley
"Coats For Kids" is under way in Huntley now until Nov. 18. Drop-off boxes are located in Huntley Grade
School and Huntley Supennarket. Coats, boots, gloves and hats are being accqited.
Kira Cassidy, of Huntley, won first prize in the State of Illinois in the fourth grader division of the Illinois Fire Inspector Association sponsored poster contest. She received a trophy and $50 savings bond at a special dinner honoring all the winners.
HFPD Teaches Fire Prevention

During Fire Prevention Week, on Oct. 17, the students of Huntley Grade School visited the fire department "Smokehouse" (donated by WondCT Lake Fire Department).
This "Smokehouse" (used by McHenry County schools) is a simulated version of a real home. Students leam about fire safety. They learned what it means to "stop, drop and roll" or "to crawl low under the smoke" in the presence of a fire. The students also learned about the importance of knowing of various "exits" in a home and a "meeting place" (outside the home), needed in case of a fu-e emergency.
The grade school students performed in simulated drills in the "Smokehouse," learning how and where to
exit the house in case a fire breaks out.
Parents - we at the Huntley Grade School as well as the Huntley Fire Department, can't stress enough about educating your students about fire safety. Please help us in this endeavour and continue with fire safety education in your own home.
We want to thank the Huntley Fire Department for
bringing this "Smokehouse" to our school and educating our students in fire prevention and safety. Also, thanks go out to tiiose dedicated Hundey fu-emen - Captain Al Wiesneth, Forrest Sodergren, Marge Strohfus, Keith Mallegni, Kim Graf, Tim Flannigan, Russ Wilson and John Winkelman - who helped in the fire safety program and ran the "Smokehouse" drills so smoothly.
