JANUARY 19. 1022 NUMBER 18 niEY^VE RUN IT OP^TEN, WOW! Local Basiceters Have Won Throe Games Hinre Lust Report, MakinK Ten Straight Wins CAN THEY BEAT LOUISVILLE? Friday night the high school trlm- luisium was the scene of some of the beat basketball playing ever uncork¬ ed by a Flora team when Lawrence¬ vllle went to tbe wall and Flora won their eighth straight start by a score of 37 to 15. Lawmceville, without que.stion has a fine team, but Flora was Just as much a better team on Friday night as the score tadlcates, teamwork, passing and basket shoot¬ ing was far and away ahead of that put out by the lanky boytfrom Law- renc^town and the orange and blue outfit had things abovi. their own wav. The first three baskets Flora regis¬ tered were rung up In one-two-three 'order, all three of them being made in a minute's playing. FVom that time on Lawrenecville waa never In any proximinily to being the winner. Flora was weakened somewhat by Simmons' suffering froni a severe cold, the gritty little guard started the game in spite of his having to whoop 'er up about every ten sec¬ onds, and stayed in until the first three quarters were over, giving way to Frank Smith who played himself a nice game for the quarter. The work of all tbe boys In this game was beyond criticism, every one of them playing a tip top game. Carmi Furnishes Ninth 8tnil|{ht Win On Saturday night Carmi's basket ball squad showed here and were beaten In the worst played game of the season, by a score of 17 to 11. The Flora, team was off "way off. and It was a wonder that they gal¬ loped home ahead of the hounds. At that, it was more ot a jog than it was a gallop, for the usually peppy five had Just about as much pep as the most ancient inhabitant of the Old Peoples' Home. Several times in the course of the game the locals were bunched up on the floor, like they were contestants in a walking debater's team, while a Carmi man •would grab tbe ball, work it down tbe floor and miss the basket by a margin smaller than the proverbial frog's hair. Our lads cannot be taken to task for their failure to run up a big score on Carml, the fact that they won should he consolation enough for us. after haying walloped Lawrencevllle *«o handily the night before. Sim¬ mons was III, Venable was worse and Knight was feeling wobbly, too. Carml has a fast team, play good team work and carries in the per¬ sonnel a player about the size of 'Bye Baby Bunting, but who plays a game like Jack, the Giant Killer's •victim could have played had there been basket ball teams In those days of skyscraper beans stalks. The Carmi boys played a clean game and will,be welome here next year should tbey be scheduled. Xenia Team Tenth Victims On Tuesday night Coach Fogler, In company with Knight, Bestow, Golds¬ by, Pittman, McDonald and Simmons, went to Xenia for the return game with X. H. S., whom they had defeat¬ ed in the first game of the season 26 to 1. Illness preyented the tak¬ ing of the entire first team, but It wasn't necessary as those who mar'p the trip were more than enotigli to bring home the. bacon, 36 to 12. The game started with Simmons on the side lines and McDonald play¬ ing his position.Ed showed a tenden¬ cy to freeze onto the ball like whis-.| kers on a chin, so Pogler gave him the hooks early In the game and'Slm- mons took his plaqe In the team. The first quarter ended with Xenia tn the lead 4 to 2. Flora done a little better In tbe second frame and the half end¬ ed 10 to 7. Flora got started In good shape in the third trame and Knight went to the bench while Mc¬ Donald was given another chance in the game. The final score was 36 to 12 in favor of Flora. Lonlsvllle Oame to be • Hard One On Friday night Flora will go to Louisville for a game with the speed¬ ing county seat five. Louisville's team must not be underrated, tor f few weeks ago Olney won from them at Olney by a margin of only one point and would not have done that it Lonlsvllle bad shot any fouls. All the Louisville scouts who have seen the Flora five in action report that they will give us a fine walloping on Friday ntght. With the regular Flora line up in the field we would have little to fear from Lonlsvllle; but with Simmons' cold and Blotter's and Venable's Ill¬ ness on hands Flora's offensive game Is seriously impaired. However Flora will play her best and will try to run the string ot victories to eleven. Let's pull one of them there "VenI, VII, Vici" things at Loutsville. CITY NIGHT "WATCHMAN Last week Ed Adduddell, who has been living at E^ast St. Louts, came to Flora and secured about 40 sig¬ natures of business men to a sub- scrlption list, agreeing to pay him so mnch monthly as salary to act as night watchman, and he has entered upon his new duties.
