son of Bast St. Louis, an old offender aa a boose ritnner, who la known to hare been operating all along the road from East St. Louis to Oiney for at least three years, aod Is be- liered hy Sherilf Cogswell and other officers of the' county to hare heen during this period the chief source of supply of "red-eye" through this section of the State.
For there months and particularly dnring the past thirty days. Sheriff Cogswell and his deputy, Mr. Jack¬ son, assisted by the officers at Flora, have put forth every effort to effect the capture of an unknown whisky smuggler. Night after night during the past three or tour weeks the sheriff, sometimes alone and some¬ times accompanied by Deputy Sheriff Jackson or special officer Robert Kitley of Flora, has patrolled the road between Flora and Xenia, hop¬ ing to overhaul the suspect.
Meanwhile the vigilance of the of¬ ficers became known to some of the citizens of Flora, - and last week SheriiT Cogswell's office In thia city! was visited by two or three men wbo pretended to wish to befriend him by warning him to get off the job betore he was killed—that the sus¬ pect was fully advised and was pre¬ pared to give battle and that It was foolhardy for him or his officers to pursue the game any further.
This counsel, safe as it appeared.
