THIRTY-EIGHTI^ YEAR.
FLORA, ILLINOIS. FRlPAY, OCTOBER 9 1908
LORD ON OUR SIDE.
Fine Weather for Carnival and Home Coming.
SUCCESSFUL EFFORTS.
win Most Flattering Words From Visitors.
The F.irmers and Merchants Carnl va and Home Coming opened on Tuesday under the auspicious clrcoin«tauce». While tiie crowds np tn this time Thursday, have been somewhat' dts appointiug, yet the attractions are really meritorious, and it Is believed will certainly draw large crowds for Ihe remaining days of tbe week. Nothing bnt the highest praise has been heard of those who have worked unceasingly to make the week's festivities spell success and even though ths crowds sbonld prove disappointing to tbe end yet the con- scioasness of baving made one strong, honest effort to give the people a week of amusement, entertainment and in¬ atruetion will be ample compensation to the tired merchants and business men who hava promoted tbe enterprise.
Tuesday, the first day, was given over t6 athletics. The principal event .of which was tbe foot- ball game between Flora aud Sandoval High School boys This was a hotly contested event and re suited in a score of 12 to 0 in favor of Flora. •
Wednesday waa Democratic Day and tbe crowd begnn to increase. A good Sized andience greeted Hon. J. C. Mc¬ Bride of Taylorvllle and Hon. James Ciraham of Springfield at tbe City Park inthe aflernoon. County Judge J. M. McNeil of Oluey, Hon. Hsrvey H. Ban¬ na of Knoxvllle, Tenn. and J. Q, A. Ledbetter of McLeansboro democratic candidate for congress spoke at the City Hall in the evei 1 g. While the day bad been v.-ell iMlvi;iti.ied yet foiuo mis¬ creant started the report tbat Demo cratic Day bnd been changed to Friday acd tills donhtlesi kept-a..nnmber of people away.
Thatsdny was Republican Day and Hon. O*)0. J';: Fiss and Judge William Prentiss bolb of Chicago were- the orators of the occasion. A full acConnt of tbis meeling will be found iu our political columns.
The free attractions on the streets draw an iiumeuae'crowd at every event. Tiie leiiiliiig ones are Dare Devil Stanley ihtheI,eH|i tho (Sap, the Delziiros in their Aerial rings, double trapeze finishlni,' with double- heel «\viiig, the Quthries in their triple trapeze and comedy boxing act and Professor Herr- gntll in bis balloon asceosiou and para chute leap.
Of tbe paid attractions the Plantation and Creation are the leading, and botb tbeae are really Brst class show. The popularity of tbe Old Plantation is by no means dimished becanse tbn owners reside In Flora. Tbey go to Xenia next •week and we bespeak for tbem a liberal patronage. Tbe people connected vrith
Creation are. perfect. gent^Iemen at d ladles, and the show is worthy of tbe patronage qf the most fastldioni.
The textile and colinary departments in the Shriver building and the fsrm and garden exhibits In tbe tepts at tbe east end at Nortb Avenue are by no means tbe least attractive features of the fair, and a visit to eitber is snre lo elicit hearty approval of the efforts in these departments. A more extended account of their exhibits will be given next week.
Several Accidents.
The first was on Tnesday afternoon when one of the pay shows was almost entirely destroyed by fire between the ^^een Kutter store und Hnncock's Fur¬ nitore Store. It siarted hy someone step¬ ping on a match. The show Is now go Ing on tn the Stater building.-
Wodnesday eight there was bard work to avert a panic in tbe Casino. A tilm exploded and burned tba operator and also C. A. Tate who were trying to pnt the fire out wblcb they did after strenuous efforts. Nevertheless Mr. 'Tate estimates his loses about IM75.00 but he bad everything repaired and ready for bnslnesa the next nlgbt.
Tbtirsday afternoon tbe balloon man, Herrguth, had a most narrow escape. One of the guy ropes was held » little too long, tilting tbe balloon against a isross arm of a telepbone pole and caus¬ ing a alight jtear. ^s tbe bag b^gan to assend, however, tbe pressure became greater, causing a great rent which al lowed fhe gas to escape in great vol- nmes. And at a height ot about 12o feet, tbe balloon completely collapsed and began to descend, at first slowly, but with rapidly increasing speed. Mr. Herrguth struck the ground with terrific force, only slightly b-oken by one of bis assistants trying to oatch him. He was severly bmised in bis teet and ankles,. bnt fortunately ho bones were broken. though.it wlil be several days before he l can make another ascension.
TAFT'S BBKVICX TO I.ABOB.
Dcstrored tha Old KascUek Vave Ae- ¦umptlan (bat Valoa Labar Ia aj CoMsplracr.
(From tbe Emporia (Kan.) Oaaette. ' The simple fact Is that no man biifc done more to place union labor on iv sound, square, law-abiding, respecleit footing thnn William II. Taft by h|H deelsiiHia in labor cnsos. Both employ¬ ers uud employed have acknowU-dgiHl the Justice of his decisions nnd learmil to abide by them, and today there la uot an liitelllgeut worker or fair- minded einployer wbo would seek to abrogate them. ;
Judge Taft lifted union labor frem the doubt and uncertainty as to Ita rights which hnd before prevented and gave It n stfindlng which It has ever since retained, and wbich bas proved under hla rulings, secure against all ottaek. The old assumption, herlved from F^nglund. that unton labor Is a conspiracy, and that workers could he prevented from leaving railway or other employment at their wlll, was swept away iforever by Judge Taft so tar as the United States Is concerned, and when an attempt was made, years later, te revive tbe principle. Judge Tuft's decision was nuoted successfully by tbe labor side to defeat tbe plea.
Mr. Taft wa» and Is labors' friend, becauae he Is absolutely just, and would no more jicrmit wrong to be done to the poorest laborer In tbe land than he would to any one (
