One of CUy county's greateat in¬ dustries is the orchard or fruit bual- Deaa. Southern Illinois, aa a section of our great SUte, cannot compete aaeoessfully with central and north¬ ern Illlnola in corn production be¬ cause they have the advantage ot the bUck aoil, but the southern por¬ tion of liltaoU is the fruit growing section of the State and Is so recog- »l«ed.
Men of sUte repuUtion have dis¬ cerned soathem Illinois' adaptability for fruit growing and have invested their time and money In the Industry tintll commercial orchards have suc¬ ceeded the old time homa orchard and the business haa been put «B a big seale. Chief among tha central IllinoU men who aaw tha fruit vision ot our section is Senator H. M. Duniap of Savoy, Champaign aaanty. Together with otber men of meana. he organized the Illlnoia Or¬ chard Co. and the Clay County Or¬ chard Co., being President and Gen- oral Manager of both organizations. Beaidea the great beneflt Clay county is reaping from the organized fruit inaustcy, there Is another big reault which grow out ot the other—name¬ ly: The building of State hard road No. 25 thrpugh Clay county from Bf¬ flngham. Originally the Egyptian Trail ran through Marlon county, but Senator Duniap and othera Intereat¬ ed in CUy county orchard develop¬ ment used their Influence In the state legislature and we secured this big highway.
There are otber orchard InteresU In Clay county, but we have been unable to secare information about them. The J. Mack Tanner intereaU, the Hits orchard eompany and others ««lta extenalve.

Bach foreman makes out a dally report sheet of hands employed and what work they were engaged in. This report goes in at close of week.
The foremen engage and discharge the men on the several placea.
Seth Cevore, the superintendent, has been In their employ 25 years and has full confidence ot Mr. Dun- lap. The fruit clean of fungus dis¬ ease and codling moth worms attest hla practical ability in growing good fruit. Already the orchards have been sprayed seven tlmea and another spray will go on for the second brood of codling moth worms.
Eighty-four thouaand barrels ot apples and twenty thouaaad buahels ot peara has been the maximum pro¬ duction in any one year.
Peaches
Clay county and this section ot Southern Illinois haa become famouii tor IU fine peaches and Mr. Duniap has planted peach orchards ot Bl¬ herta and J. H. Hale during the last three yearg until now there are 350 acrea ot peach trees of which 275 acres are ot bearing age. With suitable weather conditions next season theae orchards will produce 200 car-loads ot peaches.
