Ewing Presbytery included tbar Presbyterian churches in eleven counties of soirthem Iliinoia ^ aa fol¬ lows: White; Wabasi^ Lawrence. Richland. Clay. Wayne. Hamilton, Perry, Washington. Jefferson and Marion. This Presbytery meets twice In the ^ear. in Aprtl and September. The main busineas of theae meetings is largely the hearing of reports and suggeating plans tor forward work in the section covered. The officers consist in a Moderator. Stated Clerk,
Iwho is more or lesa a permanent of- tteer, apd his Secretaries, generally two. The Moderator is elected at each regular semiannual meeting, so this office changes at every regular aeaaion of the Presbytery. The Stated Clerk Is looked upon as the legal adviser of the Presbytery, and Is chosen with the purpoee that he ahall be qoallfied to handle oft hand most if not all legal problems as they appear during the aeesions. By legal Is meant rather, questions of Rules, o^ Order, Parltmentary Pro¬ ceedings, Etc..
The Stated Clerk generally makes out a docket, whtch ts usually ac¬ cepted as the work of the session. This covers all branches of the church's work, as Home and ForetKn Missions Temperance and Sabbath Observance Work among tiM Freedmen of'the aouth, Toung Peo¬ ples' work, and apparently one lead¬ ing featnfA is to stir up benevo¬ lences in every department.
devotional services are held at the opening of every session, when obtainable, speakers from'the Board are in attendance, and these are the great inspirational hours ot the ses¬ sions.
Nearly forty members were pres¬ ent at this session. In this Pres¬ bytery there are 86 churches and only IS ministers, thus revealing to some extent, the shortage of ministers. True, most of the vacant churches are weak, and not self-supporting, but even if these were grouped they could not serve half of the present vacaactea.
On the whole the sessions were op- tomlstic, and the oqtiook was cher^ ing.
The Presbytery extends thanks to Flora for the gracious reception re¬ ceived and for the hospitality of her cittiens.
