There are many "ties that bind," and that frlendslilp Is nol the least of tbese, was tirmly attested on Sunday, Sept. 17, when a host of friends and aciiualntances, gathered in beautiful Soutli Park, Los Angeles. Cal., to greet Colonel Randolph Smith, who Is spending u brief time in Southern Cullfornlu, on a visit to his daughter, Mrs. Roy L. Medealfe, of Long lieacli.
Tliere Is only one way to meet and enjoy old friends, and that is in true picnic style, and as that Is the style that California makes u specially of, at any time of the year, it was dis¬ tinctly apropos lliat we get out the old lunch basket, and store It wlt^i plenty of fried cliicken and potato salud, and delicious deserts, and well, you know—all those very same giKid tilings we used to carry out to the beautiful old woods in Illinois. And tlien you remember the old-time surprised delight upon arrival at tbe picnic grounds, to see one after unotlier, fumlllar and friendly face, and you could scarcely wait lo its owner by the liuiid, and "that time we"- oh w«ll, you liuw it was.
We were glud to welcome C'olonel Smilli ill our midst, und uround the tes'tive bourd, conversution released with a gusli, jumped into "liigh", with the accelerator on, and the tbrollle wide open, and before we knew il, vve were right out on tbe "Hai>ks of Wic Viubusii." Thut beingugeiiiulslreuui, there wus no ice lo be broken you understand and if there slmuld have been, tiiere wus Mrs. .Maime lluniiu Siuith and Mr.s. Ada Sliiiin, two of the best "Ice-crackers'' known lo .so- deiy ut large. Uemlnlscence fol¬ lowed reminiscence, until we were flooded with memories of Hie old home town. II a point arose in i|uestion of Hie early history of Floru. there were Mrs. Suuiiiel Wiiile, I'nde Hilly Howler, und .Mrs. Tbomus Ilay¬ ward as referees, wiiile Hert Sliinn and bis sister, .Miss Olive, could ver¬ ify later happenings.
