Smtth and his wife of Clay City took the train here Tues¬ day enroute for St. Louis. Gen. Smith has passed his 84th birthday and is in robust health and full of rigor and takes an actlre Interest In politics and business. He' was born Nor. 26, 1839, and came to Clay City in 1867 when 18 years old and bas since called that place his permanent abode. He was with the 40th UUnois Reghnent during the Cirfl War and was wounded three times, at Shiloh, at Mission Ridge and at Atlantic, Oa. Oen. Smith has held many im¬ portant positions of trust in Olay oounty and for the state of Illlnofc and has thousands of friends throughout the state who extend eordial congratulations.
