The 8.6 miles in ftichland and 3.64 miles eastvof Flora are all the Mid¬ land Trail paving now under way to aontracts.

Mrs. Ben Reaugh and Mlss Bsther - Lewis proved themselves most pro¬ ficient in duo-pUno selections as well as solos. All the numbers were rendered trom memory. The dra- > matlc readings by Mlss Marjorle Ir¬ rin were entertaining. Hiss Rider and her papils wera showered with words of appreciatioa which they Justly merited. GRADE SCHOOL TOURNAMENT
^The Flora grade, school tourna¬ ment was held Thursday and Friday, March 29th and SOth, at grade build¬ ing after school hours and at the high school gym in the evenings. The games were well , attended and enough money realized to ~ pay tor basket ball'equipment. Oames were clean and were referee^ by Prof. Rex W. Dale .
In the preliminary at the 4rada gym, rooma 6-6, 6-6 and 8-2 seeond teams were eliminated.
Thursday night at high school gym 7-7 defeated 7-3 by 11 to 10 s^re, and 8-4 defeated 7-1 score 18 to 1.
Friday night 8-2 defeated 8-4 score 16 to 6 first game. After the volley ball game 8-2 played 7-7 In the flgal, winning by score 22 to 6.

A bomb waa exploded in our city last Monday when patrpns of the Commercial Telephone Co. were In¬ formed that, beginning with Sunday, April 1st, there had been a raise In phone ratea.
As Plora and other towna affected had won a fight hefore the aUte utll- tles board laat year. It was a myatery Its to the authority for the order to raise rates. However, It has been learned that Mr. Knipe, president of the Company had appeared in Feder¬ al court and secured a temporary in¬ junction, restraining Attorney Oener¬ al Brundage and the Illlnote Com- mdfce Commission from Interfering with the rate raise, and immediately the new rates were ordered.
By iong distance phone from the office of the Commerce Commission at Springfleld.Thursday afternoon the Journal-Record editor obtained information from the Commiasion secretary that the hearing on the in¬ junction would be before Judge En¬ glish at Cairo on next Monday at 10:00 o'clock, and that Wm. B. Trautman of the Attorney General's o/fice, bad marfe of'the case for the SUte and the people.
By the new rates businesa phones are raised from $2.00 and - 32.60 per month to $3.60, and residence phones from 91.26 to $2.26. Two-party lines from $1.50 to $1.76, and coun¬ try phones from 35c to 50c per month.
MAiy phones in Flora have been ordered out, and we undersUnd the east country line toward Harmony has voted to cut out the service en¬ tirely.
After tbe hearing next Monday, we will know more clearly what course to pursue as a permanent ^filicy.

On Wednesday evening, March 28, the ladies of the.StiUh and Chat¬ ter Club celebrated their anniver¬ sary at the home of Dr. and Mrs. J. L. Young, each member bringing a guest, and It waa a gala affair. The color scheme of yellow and green was used thro'out the rooms. Table decorations were sweet peaa and ferns. Place cards were daintv Baster baskets filled with minU. A six-o'clock dinner was served from charmingly appointed tables. The menu—baked chicken with dressing, creamed /poUtoes, candied sweet-po¬ tatoes, spring salad, hot roils, ice creara, white cake, coffee. After the banquet was tboroly enjoyed, music and contests were the even¬ ing's entertanment.

The Misses Mary and Martha Bowman entertained a number of friends Thursday evening in honor of Miss Pauline McCaully, who left Saturday for her new home in Okla¬ homa. The honor guest is a popuUr member of a congenUl group who regret her departure. After a so¬ cial evening of music and conversa¬ tion a dainty lunch was aerved. Those present: The Misses McCaub ly. Mr. and Mrs. John Allen Davis are rejoicing over the arrival of a little son, bom Thursday, March 29, 1923. Mrs. Davis is at the home of her par¬ ents, Hr. and Hrs. Bn^prir Compton, in this city. The boy weighed 9 1-2 pounds and has been named Bmory Alien Davlg.
