A County Loss Seldom has the news of the death of a young man touched so mftny hearts In this county as the "word" passed by wire and tongue to Its four corners last Saturday—".Ilmmy Tan¬ ner is dead!" An only son, named after tlie dead father, the nephew of a famous governor of Illinois, happily married to Faun Marie Flelds less than two years ago, lieloved by his family for his filial disposition, and respected universally wherever known for his upright character as a busi¬ ness man and citizen, James Clifton Tanner's unexpected death from in¬ fluenza at Ills home in Louisville Saturday is a distinct county loss. Col. J. Mack Tanner of this city, cousin to the deceased young man, at¬ tended the funeral, which was on Monday at the family home in Louis¬ ville. State Tax Lower Springfield, Dec. 21~Tlie state tax rate was fixed by the State Commis¬ sion at 75 cents on the hundred dol¬ lars. The total state rate Is made up as follows: Schools 18 cents, revenue 47 cents, University of Illinois 10 cents. The rate last year was 90 cents. The state tax commission Is com¬ posed of Gov. Lowden, the state au¬ ditor and treasurer. Chinch Bug Outbreak Due in '19 Illinois is threatened by one of the worst chinch bug outbreaks In the history of the state. W. P. Flint, Chief Field Entomologist of the State Natural History Survey, has Issued u warning to farmers In the danger zone, urging them to organize to burn over all places sheltering' the bugs. Just as we organized to " lick the Hun" so we must organize to de¬ stroy this pest which threatens to rob Illinois farmers of their crops next summer. It was sent to him from overseas by his cousin, C'aptain Joe Southwlck, now with the "army of occupation" some¬ where beyond the RJilne. (Captain Joe found the helmet on the battle¬ field near Chateau-Thierry and close to the spot where Quentin Roosevelt, son of former I'resident Roosevelt, met his death last August In a fight with an enemy plane. Captain Southwicit Is a son of Mrs. Efllth Southwlck of this city. Nore Youthful Robbers William Jackson. Pearl Branch and Virgil Frost, three boys from Odin, were arrested in Flora last Thursday by Marshal Tatman and Detective Kitley. They were charged with burglary and larceny.
