THIRTY-SEVENTH YEAR.
FLORA, ILLINOIS, FRIDAY, AUGUST 9, 1807.
SUNDAY SCHOOL
CONVENTION
Association of Ail Schools in Olay County UmH* in Fiora.
WORK OUTLINED
And Plaas Recommended For the Eosuing Yeir,
The Annual Convention of the Clay County Snnday School Association wan held In Flora on Augnst fir.it and second, at the Presbyterian chnrch.
We regret that there was not a larger number of delegates from the schools thronghont the connty, to enjoy the most excellent program that was car¬ ried throngh. Every speaker was earn¬ est and enthusiastic and thoroughly awake to the need of progress in Sunday Scbool work. Thoae who attended the KSKsions of tho convention have gone back to their work determind to put forth a greater effort to instruct onr tioys, girls, and young people in the troths of the Biblo and to win them for tbe service of Christ. Oh! that every Snnday School worker in onr Aasoeia¬ tion might be Impressed with the great need of winning the boys and girls for Chriit t)etore tbe temptation* of the world have allared them away from the chnrch.
The theme of the convention was "Oar Work." Text, 'aive diligence to present thyself approved unto God a wc "iinan tbat needetb not to be I shamed."
The committee appointed by the Pres¬ ident ^submitted the following recom¬ mendations :|
We heartily endorse all that has been snggested in the conference of the con • vention in reference to the work of the ^ifterent departments of the Snnday Sobool.
W* shonld resolve that daring the ^^^-¦comix^year more emphasis be laid upon IflR^WfVoTk In the following departments. "¦ 'PlrBt^We recommend that teachers' training daaae* be formed. We need to hsve onr teachers trained as well as poasible for their work. By making nso of helps prepared by those who have bad experience, the teachers thronghont the Bnnday Schools of onr county will bscome better equipped taiid more ef¬ ficient, or if it is not possible to organize training classes they shoald at leant, have teacher's meetings led by pastor, superintendent or some one else who is •ompetent.
Second—We recommend) Home de¬ partments to bo eeublisbed. In every eommnnity there are a large number of "shut ins" and invalids. Tolthese the home departments! will; not (only give cheer but will bring them injtouch with tha work of the Sanday school,
Third—fn connection with the Pri¬ mary work we (recommend that Cradle Kolls be established. Wa know thla bas beon »iQcceaa In places where It has been tried and baa been] the means of not only brioging the babies eventually Into the S. S. but has brought parents as well.
Fonrth—We recommend that a greater effort be made to have the temperance lessons taught In a more practical and helpful way, throngh the use of object lessons, charts and talks from profes¬ sional men. Tbis eCEort is necessary to keep the ideals of ths boys abreast with the progress that is being made along pollUcid Unea.
Fifth—We recommend tbat an effort t>e ' mide for more systematic work dnring
tiieS.S. bonr. This can be accomplished li having the classes graded. We heartily endorse the graduating exer¬ cises that have proven ao helpful In creating interest. *' Sixth—We recommend that the
^ schoola endeavor to increase the average
attendance by having either tbe teachers or a committ«e visit the absent scholars sumatlme daring the week. ^__
We fnrther recommend that the offl • cere of the township and county associa¬ tion make a special effort to keep tn closer tonch with the Individual school and to Inspire and encourage them by more frequent visitation and also by clronlatlnK literatnre and by corres- pondeDce.
We also recommend in order to se- careja larger attandanoe at the town¬ ship and connty conventions that some repreaentatlve be appointed to visit every school and urge npon them to send delegatae. If neoessary a small fund ojuld be provided to payjth* expenses at anoh repreeentaiive.
In regard to onr beautiful flag which bas bewi prorldedby the assoclatioD, wa tar» ealy iwrtt ol Vflaa sad tlaoki
and hope that It will be the means of In¬ creasing the attendance at the conven¬ tions.
We recmnmend that a vote of thanks be given to the officers for tbeir untir¬ ing Jefforta to make this convention a snocess, and also the atate workers for tbe helpful talka and Inspirations tbey have given to as, to tbe people of Flora for thebr kindness la entertaining tbe delegates.
