FLORA, ILLINOIS, THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 1917 NUMBER 23 I™ BAPfQUET OF THE COMMERCIAL CLUB OCCASION BEING 7TH ANNIVERSARY ¥ One Hundred and Thirty-two Plates Being Spread to Accom- ntodate the Assembly The most successful and Interesting meeting ever held by the Flora Com¬ mercial Club was that of Its seventii anniversary, held at the Borders Gar¬ age Tuesday evening of tlits week. The entertainment coraiulttee com¬ posed of N, E, Prince, .T. M, Wll- keison and C, W, McCaivley, had prepared and announced a menu which , they helle>ed -would attract every tnetnber and prospective member of the club. In this they were not dis¬ appointed. Arrangements were made withC. H.Green wood to .serve the ban- • queb at the Jones Hotel, but it was soon seen from reports coming to Sec¬ retary Brown, that the dining room at tills popular hotel could not seat the number who would attend, and the committee and Mr. Greenwood wei* up against the real thing and somewhat troubled, until that prince of good fellows, John Borders, came to the rescue and said he would move the cars from his Garage, and give the committee the use of his large room free of charge, a generous act which was appreciated. Plates were spread for one hundred and twenty-flve guests, but more came, and when all was ready Dr. "W. W.Edwards delivered a brief Invo¬ cation, while the guests stood with loviered heads, who numbered one hundred and thirty-two. All smiling, edthuslastlc splendid men, composed of farmers, railroad, business, pro¬ fessional men and workmen, repre¬ senting every vocation. The menu, as published In last ¦weeks Record was ready and required more than one hour to serve, by ob¬ liging attendants. In a way that was appreciated by all, and was a comple¬ ment to Mr. Greenwood and those who assisted htm. Including Presi der^t Scudamore and J, Bowman, who, when the waiters were over- ¦whelmed In their efforts to supply the ravenous appetlte.s, jumped Into the fray and passed the bread arid water, Wheu more than one hour was spent in this delightful exercise, wlilch seemed but a few moments had pass¬ ed. President W, D. Scudamore an¬ nounced that a speaking program had been arranged, and as a beginning inade a splendid speech himself. Tell¬ ing what the club had accomplish¬ ed,, which elicited hearty applause and opened the eyes of not a few who had taken no note of the good work that had been going on for the gen¬ eral good. ITe was followed by Randolph Smith, on. tlie same subject. Then W, A, Canapbell, Dr, N. W, Bowman, II, F, - Pis ley and Leslie Brissenden talked interestingly abopt Agriculture and the Dairy Industry and the posslblll- tles of tlie Clay county farms, .lames McGregor. Hon. R.
