"A Soldier of Fortune'
Frank Bralnard Gompert, an Arl- zobii ''soldier of fortune," spent the day in Flora last Sunday. He is a modest and unassuming man of about 35 years, but he yielded to the earnest request of a Record representative and brietly sketched his expwlences as a lieutenant on the staff of Gen¬ eral Villa in 11»13, and later as second Captain on the staff of Gen. Ea Beu- navldes of the Zaragoza Brigade. Captain Gompert then further said:
"I stopped in Flora on my way home to see If I could flnd a brother of Ralph Hlggins, my old aviation corps instructor. I was born in Ari¬ zona. I went Into the Mexican army and served until It seemed to me trouble with my own country was un¬ avoidable. Then I resigned and went to Canada. Therei enlisted In the otticers.' training battalion, wliere 1 Qualitied as lieutenant of artillery In May, 1915. I was transferred by re¬ quest to the Royal Flying Corps, and qualified as a pilot. After'jvards I was sent to France and placed In the 49th siiuadron. I had my tirst air ex¬ perience soon after my arrival. I was two years In the aviation service in France, and have brought down eight German planes. My firs't success was on Dec. 20, 1915, at an altitude of 9000 feet. On St. Patrick's day, 1917, while scouting, I saw two German planes aad at once made for them. My flrst shot from a machine gun broifght one down. Then I noticed three more planes advancing on rae, and the situation begun to look dang¬ erous. By the greatest luck, tho', and raaneuverlng I was able to punc¬ ture and bring down three of my four enemies. The remaining one escaped by flight. You see, I am of Irish descent, and on St. Patrick's day I couldn't do anything else than whip four times my weight In Germans. 1 flnally, tho, got the worst of an alr- flght, and was myself brought to earth by an enemy plane, falling *)0
