BIG CONFUGRATION AT SEXTON FACTORY
liS-st Thumday EvpalnK About Six* Thirt) in Upstairs Stock Room
INSURANCE COVERS LOSS
NISS WEIR BECOMES BRIDE OrCJ. CONOVER
Young Couple Were Married at Da¬ venport, Iowa, on Sunday Septnnber 18th
Last Thursday evening at 6:20 Alphus Kirkpatrick. employed at the Flora Sexton factory, returned (rom supper and on going up the rear ele. vator ot the building, discovered (Ire In the room partitioned oft (or a stock room wherein ^re kept raw material and finished goods of the (actory. This room''was butilt In the north portion o( the second story and was o( thick lumber and several feet high. This made the flre hard to get to by the'firemen, as It could not be (ought in the open.
The alarm was sounded and the city fire department was soon on the job, minus three of the department' who were out of town. It was first attempted to tight the fire (rom the west upstairs windows, but it was seen that the dratt was aSsinst them and chief Yeck ordered the firemen to change to the south end of the building and the hose was used through the (root door.
Firemen Suffocated
While fighting tbe flre trom the south aDKle the firemen ratf Into the unexpected, (or tbe smoke and gas were terrific and at least (ive o( the boys were overcome and some had to be carried out. The plans were then changed and tbe hose operated (rom the east side at the north part ot building and here better success In reaching the blaze was obtained. Later the fire was subdued to some extent and tbe bose mea got through the north door and up the conc^^ete stairway where water and chemicals together subdued the flames and by eight-thirty the (Ire had been ex¬ tinguished.
Durng the flre the electric light wires were cut and this made it dark where the pall ot smoke hung and it was difficult to see how to tight the fire. The building is of concrete and steal and presumably fireproof and this fact saved It from destrnc- tion. However, the constructloiv of the building made It hold the tire like an oven and it was almost red hot Inside.
Firemen In>ured
Harry Rice was worst Injured of the firemen. He went up the concrete steps at south end of the building to open door to the roof, but was overcome and (ell down the stairs. He caught tbe Iron stairway railing with his right hand and It was badly burned. His right arm and (ace were also severely burnod and he will probably be laid up for some little time.
Cecil Tlbbs fell down the back concrete stairway and his bud: wns wrenched, but he was able to get cut of bed by S.tturday and is uut in town, but hns not returned to work.
A man named Bail, who has been here painting the Orpheum theatre, but IS not a member o( tiie drs de¬ partment, su((ered several severe burn« while assis'iup at tin) (Ir-.
