IGGCC Legislating a Greener Future for Illinois
The Illinois Green Government
Coordinating Council is hard at work
drafting legislation that ensures a
greener future for Illinois.
The Green Governments Illinois Act
will strengthen the Council and clarify
the important role of state agencies
in protecting the environment
through increased resources and
guidance. The act sailed out of the
Environmental Health Committee
and now awaits passage by the Illinois
House of Representatives.
The Green Cleaning Schools Act
is also on its way to becoming law.
The act, which will require all K-12
schools in the state to purchase and
use non-toxic cleaning products,
passed both chambers and is on its
way to the Governor’s desk.

State to Open First Green Lease
Right across the street from Chicago’s Millennium Park, the Department
of Central Management Services – a Green Government Coordinating
Council agency – will manage Illinois’ first-ever green lease. Under the
green-lease pilot program, the building at 122 S. Michigan Ave. was
rehabbed using green building practices such as the proper disposal
of interior construction materials, the use of recycled materials for
carpeting, and the installation of energy-efficient light fixtures. The
state’s first green lease will promote environmentally responsible
office buildings while reducing the overall cost of leasing and managing
property.
