THE
SAVEDATE
James B. Stewart, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of
the best-selling books Den of Thieves, Blind Eye,
Blood Sport and Disney War, is one of more than
two dozen Illinois authors who will appear at the
10th annual Illinois Authors Book Fair, Nov. 16-18,
at the Illinois State Library in Springfield. Other
nationally known authors appearing at the book
fair include Scott Turow (Ordinary Heroes),
Jacquelyn Mitchard (The Deep End of the Ocean),
Newbery Honor Book winner Marion Dane Bauer
(On My Honor) and popular cartoonist Pat Byrnes.
Because of the event’s ever-increasing popularity,
Book Fair events have been expanded to three
days:
Thursday, November 16: Festivities begin with an
all-day celebration tied to Family Reading Night.
Sponsored by Secretary of State and State
Librarian Jesse White, Family Reading Night is an
annual event held statewide where families are
encouraged to read together. Children’s authors
and storytellers will entertain Springfield area stu-dents
during the morning and afternoon. From 6
to 8:30 p.m., parents and children are invited to
Family Reading Night activities at the State
Library, which will feature authors, costumed
characters, celebrity readers and other family-centered
events. Author Marion Dane Bauer will
read and sign books for patrons.
Friday, November 17: Events kick off at 9 a.m. at
the State Library with the return of popular book
appraiser Tom Joyce, who has developed a large
following from his appearances at previous book
fairs. James B. Stewart will give a presentation at
11:30 a.m. based on two of his other popular best-selling
books, The Call to Duty: Leadership in
Times of Terror and The Heart of a Soldier. He also
will answer questions and sign copies of his books.
Gardening experts Gloria Young and Dianne
Nolan also will conduct a program for “green
thumb” types.
The day will conclude with an evening reception
highlighting Scott Turow, whose new book
Ordinary Heroes will be featured in the Springfield
area’s “Together We Read” program. The reception
is sponsored by Friends of Lincoln Public Library
in Springfield.
Saturday, November 18: The State Library’s doors
will open at 9:30 a.m. for the Illinois Authors Book
Fair, where patrons can meet authors, attend work-shops
and have their books signed. An on-site
bookstore will once again be available as well as
many fun activities for kids. Illinois Poet Laureate
Kevin Stein and author Kaylie Jones will present
awards to the winners of the 2nd annual Illinois
Emerging Writers Competition, sponsored by Secre-tary
of State Jesse White. Three well-known Illinois
fine arts photographers — Larry Kanfer, Gary Irving
and Robert Shaw — also will be featured.
The Book Fair concludes Saturday evening with
the showing of the film “A Soldier’s Daughter
Never Cries,” based on the novel by Kaylie Jones.
Jones will host a discussion of the book and film
afterwards.
With three days of free family fun, the 2006 Illinois
Authors Book Fair promises to be the best ever!

Federal document online conversion project
The State Library is working on a retrospective conversion project to add a num-ber
of materials from its large federal documents collection to the online “I-Share”
catalog and OCLC. Because the federal documents collection includes many
older materials from the 19th and 20th centuries, information about these materi-als
currently is unavailable online. This project will allow access to materials that
I-Share and OCLC users may not have known the State Library owns.
