Charleston Side Channel Reservoir TMDL
Progress Report #4
March 31, 2002
What pollutants do the TMDLs for the
Charleston Side Channel Reservoir address?
Illinois EPA (IEPA) will develop separate
TMDLs to address each cause of impairment in
the Charleston Side Channel Reservoir. At the
end of the process, the Charleston Side Channel
Reservoir will have TMDLs for phosphorus,
nitrogen, total suspended solids, and excessive
algal growth/chlorophyll a.
What activities has IEPA accomplished to
date?
The TMDL development process involves a
number of steps (see text box on this progress
report). To date, IEPA and its consultant, Tetra
Tech, Inc., have completed a number of the steps
necessary to generate TMDLs for the Charleston
Side Channel Reservoir. Provided below is a
detailed description of recent activities:
· Held a public meeting at the Charleston
High School on January 17, 2002, to inform
watershed residents and other stakeholders of the progress made to date in developing the
TMDL.
· Created a TMDL fact sheet that was handed out at the January 17, 2002 public meeting
· Contacted Eastern Illinois University to obtain information on best management practices that
have been installed since the early 1990s.
· Contacted NRCS offices in Champaign and Douglas Counties to update them on the status of
the TMDL and request information on agricultural practices in the watershed.
· Continued reservoir and watershed modeling to support TMDL development.
What are upcoming activities related to the Charleston Side Channel TMDL development
process?
· Tetra Tech expects to submit the draft TMDL report to IEPA during the second quarter of
2002. The report will present the findings of the water quality and watershed modeling and
will present recommendations for how much loadings will need to be reduced. IEPA will
review the draft TMDL and provide comments to Tetra Tech.
Object Description
| Title | Charleston Side Channel Reservoir TMDL: Progress Report #4 |
| Description | This report documents the analysis and findings of stage 1 of the TMDL development for water segments within this watershed. Water quality data are gathered by the IEPA, the US Geological Survey, and the USEPA. Illinois is required to identify water bodies that do not meet water quality standards and to determine the Total Maximum Daily Load for pollutants causing the impairment. |
