Sixteen Illinois library representatives will take part
in the prestigious Library Leadership Institute, Sept.
26-29, at the Illinois State Library. Participants
were selected by Secretary of State Jesse White,
State Library staff members and representatives
from the Mortenson Center for International
Library Programs, U of I-Urbana-Champaign.
"Thinking Outside the Borders: Library Leadership
In a World Community" will bring these librarians
together with 14 visiting librarians from Botswana,
India, Colombia,
Japan,
Mauritius, South
Africa and
Vietnam to
promote a
greater
understanding
and
appreciation of
the world
community in
which librarians
work.
"These men and
women will
share and
develop ideas
and programs that reflect the fact that librarians all
over the world share many common concerns,"
said Secretary White. "On a host of issues ranging
from the preservation of materials and expanding
technology to fund raising and advocacy, librarians
worldwide must develop strategies and initiatives
to deal with ever-changing global needs.”
Participants will develop problem-solving skills
that may be useful in international situations, and
discuss cross-cultural communication strategies.
Most importantly, participants will develop lasting
professional relationships with librarians from
other nations.
In September 2006,
a second workshop
will involve
librarians from
Mexico, Canada
and other U.S.
states. A third
workshop in 2007
will involve
librarians from
Mexico, Arizona
and Nebraska.
Funding for the
project is made
possible by a grant
from the federal
Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Paul Butkovich exhibit at the ISL — The Illinois State
Library welcomed a special exhibition this summer of

State Librarian Jesse White held a reception to mark the
event, which was attended by many members of the
Butkovich family. Pictured with Secretary White are
Edward Smith, vice president of the Laborers
International Union of North America, which
cosponsored the exhibit, and Butkovich's widow,
