PRELIMINARY FALL 2002 ENROLLMENTS IN
ILLINOIS HIGHER EDUCATION
This report summarizes preliminary fall term 2002 headcount and full-time-equivalent
(FTE) enrollments for Illinois colleges and universities, and 12-month unduplicated headcount
enrollment for fiscal year 2001. Final fall term headcount enrollments, aggregated by student
characteristics such as gender, racial/ethnic group, class level, and declared major, are obtained
during the winter and are published each spring in the Data Book on Illinois Higher Education.
Fall term enrollments provide a “snapshot” of Illinois higher education enrollments on the 10th
day of the fall term. Unduplicated headcount enrollment illustrates the number of individuals
who attend colleges and universities over the course of the full year.
Preliminary Fall 2002 Enrollments
Fall 2002 preliminary headcount enrollments at 187 institutions total 785,631
representing an increase of 4.4 percent from fall 2001. A table with headcount and FTE
enrollment for each Illinois college and university for fall terms 2001 and 2002 is attached. The
headcount enrollment by sector for the last six fall terms is shown below.

Public universities reported a preliminary headcount enrollment increase of 5,043
(2.6 percent) between fall 2001 and 2002 while public community colleges reported a headcount
increase of 15,731 (4.6 percent). Independent institutions reported a headcount increase of
12,104 (5.5 percent). Institutions in the independent sector are subdivided into two general
categories in the attached detailed report of institutional enrollments. The category “Independent
Not-For-Profit Institutions” includes those not-for-profit institutions offering liberal arts curricula
or a variety of courses of study along with professional, theological, fine arts, and technical
institutions. Enrollments in degree-granting proprietary institutions are reported in the second
category. In the independent sector, not-for-profit institutions reported a headcount enrollment
