More than 35 students from the Chicagoland area, East St. Louis and Carbondale gradu-ated in March from the Illinois Department of Transporta-tion’s innovative Engineer Technician Training Program (ETTP).
The training program provided students with a first-hand op-portunity to learn the skills of the Engineer Technician posi-tion, including reading and un-derstanding construction plans, surveying, statistical computa-

tions, and ethics.
Engineer Technicians perform job duties such as drafting high-way and bridge design plans, inspecting construction pro-jects, testing and inspecting materials, and creating traffic surveys.
The ETTP is a 10-week, 240-hour class. During the training, students also are introduced to spreadsheets, word processing, presentations, resume writing, and interviewing skills.

Union Pacific Railroad will host an informational session on April 20 about available general contractor and sub-contractor opportunities, scale of work, qualifications, schedule and timing for contractor bid sub-missions, for the following ser-vices: -Paving -Track Construction -Fencing -Pavement Marking -Traffic Control -Erosion Control/Seeding
-Grading -Structure Replacement (Bridge and Culvert)
Illinois Department of Trans-portation staff will also be in attendance.
In 2011, Union Pacific and the Illinois Department of Trans-portation will be upgrading more than 100 miles of existing track between Chicago and St. Louis, as part of the High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail Program.

For students inter-ested in applying for the Summer Engi-neering Program or the Summer Techni-cal Program, applica-tion submission is due by the close of business Friday, April 15.
The Summer Engi-neering Program, which tentatively runs May 16 through August 31, is for stu-dents who have com-pleted a minimum of one year (30 semes-ter hrs, 45 qtr. hrs credit) of college courses in engineer-ing to four or more years in engineering.
The Summer Techni-cal Program is for high school graduates who are 18 years or older and students who are attending or have completed four or more years of college in areas other than engineering.

College in River Grove and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, aims to help im-prove diversity within the transportation industry appli-cant pool.
Graduates received an Illinois College Community Board sanctioned Certificate of Com-pletion. The Illinois Depart-ment of Transportation’s engi-neer recruitment team has encouraged each graduate to apply for the Engineering Tech-nician positions currently avail-able. The Outreach and Recruitment Office has been recruiting both in-state and out-of-state Civil Engineer Trainee (CET) candidates, specifically those associated with the National Society of Black Engineers, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and Society of Women Engineers. The ag-gressive recruitment efforts have taken Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) recruiters and engineers to seven different states in two months to attract a more diverse and qualified workforce. To date, 42 positions have been offered to the candidates with an additional 18 job offers pending. Recruiting efforts are already underway for Fall 2011 CET candidates at New Jersey Institute of Technology, Temple University, Morgan State University and Howard University. The outreach and recruiting team are currently in the process of gathering applications and resumes from col-lege graduates to help diversify the applicant pool.
