The College and University Professional
Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR),
Midwest Region, held its annual
conference on March 16-19, 2008 at the
HyattRegency Hotel in Chicago, Illinois.
The CUPA-HR Midwest Region has
approximately 395 member institutions
including private colleges, institutes,
seminaries, comprehensive universities,
community colleges, technical colleges,
university system offices, research
universities, medical colleges, and other
professional schools from Illinois, Indiana,
Iowa, Kansas, Manitoba, Michigan,
Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North
Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
The member institutions are as diverse as
they are similar.
As diverse as our region is, and no matter
what the positions or institutional
affiliations are, the primary common link is
the practice of human resources at
institutions of higher education. The
Midwest region offers unique networking
a n d p r o f e s s i o n a l d e v e l o pme n t
opportunities custom designed to meet the
needs of practitioners in Midwestern
colleges and universities. Research, public
policy, technical assistance, and product
innovations are available to members as
well.
The State Universities Civil Service System
was featured in this year's annual
conference. On Monday afternoon, Bob
Curry, Jeff Brownfield, and myself made a
presentation entitled 'Electronic Pre-
Employment Testing for Support Staff
Positions'. Our presentation included an
interactive demonstration of the new web-based
pre-employment testing system (E-Test).
We demonstrated the various
components developed in this system to
meet basic civi l service statutory
requirements. We also took some time to
conduct an interactive testing process with
audience participants. It was fun and
informative to all participants and provided
an opportunity to dialogue with other state
civil service systems.
Our E-Test system was the Winner of the
Midwest Region's Best Practice Award in
2006. We are quite proud of this
accomplishment and were pleased to be
afforded an opportunity to display this
system feature in such a prestigious
networking event for higher education
human resource professionals. We
interacted with many higher education
institutions and saw many of our Illinois
Higher education colleagues at this event.
