From the
Reference Desk
This issue of Inform Quarterly touches on a
few hot topics making headlines today.
With bridges falling, levees breaking and
highways crumbling, transportation
experts and government officials are tak-ing
a closer look at the current state of
our infrastructure. Identity theft is on the
rise, and an FTC Web site is a good
resource to learn more about this crime.
As with previous issues, we have included
new reference works and current interest
titles on a variety of topics. The Reference
staff invites you to visit the library this fall
and check out its displays on the second-floor
bridge.

Infrastructure on the
minds of Americans
From the levees of New Orleans to the underground steam pipes of New York
City to the bridges of California and Minneapolis, the condition of America’s
infrastructure has been increasingly front-page news. Following are a few
resources that you may find interesting and helpful:
www.asce.org —The American Society of Civil Engineers offers its view on the
issues, including a plan for the country and a report card with an interactive map
of “What’s Happening In Your State?”
www.fhwa.dot.gov/infrastructure —The Office of Infrastructure, U.S.
Department of Transportation, provides information on roads, bridges and other
infrastructure in the form of reports, preventive measures, construction, history
and much more.
www.bts.gov — The Bureau of Transportation Statistics offers a number of
reports and statistical information on the current state of the American trans-portation
infrastructure.
www.win-water.org —The Water Infrastructure Network, a coalition of elect-ed
officials, water service providers, state administrators, engineers and environ-mentalists,
provides reports on drinking and wastewater infrastructure.
INFORM service
adds new journal
A new publication has been added to the list of journals available on the
INFORM table of contents service. Criminology & Public Policy, published
quarterly by the American Society of Criminology, is a peer-reviewed journal
focused on the study of criminal justice policy and practice. “The central objec-tive
of the journal is to strengthen the role of research findings in the formula-tion
of crime and justice policy through publishing empirically based, policy-focused
articles.”
Meanwhile, the journal Network Computing has ceased publication. We apolo-gize
for any inconvenience this may cause INFORM patrons who were receiving
the table of contents for this publication.
To add Criminology & Public Policy to your selection of articles for INFORM, con-tact
the Reference Section at 217-782-7596 or infoline@ilsos.net. Please include
your INFORM number on any correspondence.
We look forward to hearing from you!
