The Illinois State Library marked an important
milestone on Nov. 20, 2002, by celebrating
the 10th anniversary of its first satellite
teleconference.
State Library Associate Director Patricia
Norris and Tina Hubert, formerly of the State
Library and now an employee of the Lewis
and Clark Library System, hosted the
landmark November teleconference titled,
“Geographic Information Systems and
Libraries.” The event was the State Library’s
50th teleconference since airing its first
program in November 1992. Nearly 1,000
viewers at 82 locations in 23 states registered
to view the program. And 31 locations in
Illinois offered the program. While most
viewers watched the program
via satellite, others watched it
via Web cast through the
Secretary of State’s Web site.
“Through resources such as our
free satellite teleconferences,
the Illinois State Library is
committed to providing
members of the library
community — in Illinois, other
states and abroad — the most
up-to-date tools, educational
resources, training and
information,” said Secretary of
State and State Librarian Jesse
White.
More than 10,000 people have
viewed the State Library’s
satellite teleconferences over
the past 10 years. Each satellite
teleconference is provided free, allowing
librarians, library trustees and others to obtain
valuable information, continuing education
and training without traveling.
Teleconferences may be viewed from more
than two-dozen downlink sites throughout
Illinois. During a teleconference, viewers may
call in questions to expert panelists. After the
satellite broadcast, the conferences are
available on video via interlibrary loan
through the state’s regional library systems
and the State Library.
