I Frieda Polchow Rutz Burba entered
these articles about Chicago Ridge ac I
remember them - I was born Dec 29- 1904
on a farm located at 105th central - My
father Charles Polchow was the first
Pres. of Chgo Ridge - which I believe was
in 1914 - I remember there was a 2 story factory
at 104th & Birmingham which was Vacant but
it had this reading on the side ( slot machine manufacte
had a separate building 2 storie in the front that
had an apt upstairs but downstairs was the
village post office operated by Elsie Nueman
her parents & her lived in the apt. Now it is
all torn down - the post office has moved
mony times since then - next it was in Klee's
store, a two story building located at 106th Princess
Klees lived upstairs later building was moved
to 106th S. E Side & Ridgeland. it was many things after
being a grocery store for years. Bristown barber shop.
Novelty shop 0 apt. and finally in 1967 it was
condemmed and burnt down owner Bruns Duckurt
I remember when the big 3 story building at 104 and
Ridgeland was a rooming house operated by Mr & Mrs
John Henry Meyer 0 it was later made into apt upstairs
tavern down and changed hands many times it was
torn down in 1967-- I remember when their was a
frame building where the brick one is now at
106th Ridgeland N. E Side was a Brandt's tavern, then a church
now a teen club. The old Pres. Church that
sold to V. F W.

| Description | Personal narrative about the history of Chicago Ridge written by Frieda Polchow Rutz Burba in 1968. Frieda discusses local businesses, the post office, the Klee General Store, taverns and the one-room schoolhouse. Frieda was the daughter of Charles and Luzina Polchow. Charles served as the first president of Chicago Ridge when it organized as a village in 1914. Frieda's first husband Gus Rutz, a former Chicago Ridge village trustee, died in 1952. She married Bruno Burba in 1955. Frieda is credited with organinzing the first Chicago Ridge Brownie Troop, Troop 215, in 1949. Frieda died in 1974 at the age of 69. |
