In the Mouse there are 31 Farmers ; 18 Lawyers ; 7 Merchants ; 3 Physicians ; 1 Engineer; 2 Printers; 5 Mechanics.
" Illinois Territory was organized in 1809, and admitted as a State in 1818. The first Land Office was established at Vandalia in 1820. The population of the State in 1809 was 12 292 ; in 1818, about 50 000. There were, at this time, 15 counties— all in the southern part of the State. The northern part was inhabited only by Indians, with the exception of a few fur traders. The present number of counties is 100, and the population 70 0000."
"Why the Illinoians are called ' Suckers.'—In the early settlement of the northern portion of our State, the marvellous stories of fortune-making at the mines attracted to that region many of the farmers from the southern settlements. It was the
custom with them, after putting in their Spring crops, to ascend the Mississippi and labor at the mines until Fall, when they would return to gather their crops ; imitating the "sucker," which ascend* the rivers in the Spring, to deposit its spawn, and returns in the Fall. Hence, such such persons were called " Suckers;" and the term, which was at first applied to tliat class at persons, has since become general in its applicativn to all the citizens of the State.
